Lawrence, ο οποίος στο διήγημά του «The Man who loved islands» διαπραγματεύεται τις κοινωνικές σχέσεις του ανθρώπου και την σχέση του με την φύση.

By using painting, drawing and processed photographs, Thanos Klonaris creates hybrid places where real and imaginary elements co-exist harmonically. In his recent research, he is exploring the boundaries between the real and the imaginative, the relations and the opposites between existing and non-existing spaces.
Addressing the same issues, his present body of work is entitled Islands: Earth surrounded by water. Small or large in surface, with specific and controlled boundaries, islands are very often considered ideal places for seclusion, insulation and hermitage.
Islands have always constituted a philosophical/literary field of action for the bipolar terminology of good/evil. Thanos Klonaris sets questions which refer to mortality, and also the relationship between heaven and hell, based on the painting of Arnold Bocklin “The isle of dead’’, whilst relating John’s revelation in the island of Patmos, with  isolation and the transcendental. As far as the social aspect of the islands is concerned and the need of man for quest, creation and communication, he investigates the secluded but inventive Robinson Crusoe and the misanthrope character of D.H Lawrence’s novel “The Man who loved islands”, who deals with the social relations of man and his connection with nature. Concluding, islands as an artificial/natural paradise, the accounts to the utopias and the lost island of Atlantis, concern places where everything is based on perfection and balance.
The islands set the background and the subject matter for the exhibition of Thanos Klonaris, which elaborates in 3 axis, social, religious, imaginary.

The human need to create a personal space automatically established a relationship between individual, others and nature. Man’s very first action when, by drawing a line on the ground with a branch, he closed off his territory, has provided the point of departure and inspiration for these installations. The idea of inhabiting, the transition from the natural to the built, the relationship between private and public and the interpretation of space, all emerge from reading the work. The piano factory is the architectural plan of a piano manufacturing plant built in New York in 1880 on a 1:2 scale. Firstly, the material from which pianos are made – wood – is linked at the same time juxtaposed with the trees in the outdoor area in the plan. At the same time, the built and public environment of the building converses but also conflicts with the uncontrollable and fully accessible area of the tree garden. Finally, time and place play their own role in this representation. The New York piano factory, now closed, is virtually revived in Athens as a drawing plan in the different context of the visual arts.

In the framework of the thematic exhibition series Public Space and Social Networks, the National Museum of Contemporary Art organises its first exhibition in outdoor public space. The exhibition Expanded Ecologies. Perspectives in a Time of Emergency deals with issues related to the current ecological problem. The exhibition does not focus on a specific environmental theme; rather, it seeks to expand the concept of ecology and to approach it through contemporary artistic production, to provide a space for reflection on this complex issue. It adopts the "expanded" interpretation of ecology, according to Guattari, who speaks – in his book The Three Ecologies – of a new ecosophy, based on three different ecological registers: the environment, social relationships and human subjectivity. Guattari`s ecosophy does not involve divisions such as nature and culture, nature and man, human species and non-human species; it deals with diverse aspects of ecological thought and action – the environmental, the mental, the social, the political.
Realised at a time when ecology is at the centre of international interest, the exhibition seeks to expand the framework of reception for concepts such as the environment and environmentalism through "post-environmentalist" awareness. It does not propose a correct, "green" agenda; instead, it takes for granted that today`s ecological crisis is a complex global phenomenon, directly related to economy, society and culture. The participating artists have not created works "for" the environment but, rather, works which encourage us to think over the social, political and cultural condition, as well as the relationship of the urban and the natural environment; the individual, nature and society; nature and technology; architecture and ecology.
The exhibition showcases work by 27 mostly Athens-based artists, architects and artist collectives who propose works for the outdoor public spaces of the Athens Conservatory. The exhibition is cast in the form of an open narrative that juxtaposes themes and approaches pertinent to the many-sided issue of ecology. It features sculptural and sound installations, in situ works, evening video projections, landscape interventions, participatory and community-based projects.

Five young artists, with eclectic similarities between them, come together in the dominion of the space, as it is intensely indicated in their work, with all the convergences and divergences that they reveal. Their dealing with space, as both an external or internal area, visible, invisible or an afterimage, occurs by the need to exist and coexist. Their manner is identified through variation and liaison. Painted surfaces, photography, constructions, video - the means that they manipulate and use- project the dimension of space as natural, existential, physical, historical, architectural and a metaphysical condition, which is constantly explored and renegotiated. The need which leads to their coexistence also establishes their mutual area, the infinite space in which the material moves. "We don't want rooms which look like painted coffins for our living bodies any more" El Lisitzky announced at the age of Constructivism. The demand comes full bodied down to our age. With all the anagoges and metaphors that it indicates.

Bargain Prices on Elephant Gun

"Rolling" , mixed media on aluminum, 105 x 140 cm, 2008.

"House in paradise" , mixed media on wood, 75 x 150 cm, 2008.

If I was young, I'd flee this town I'd bury my dreams underground As did I, we drink to die, we drink tonight
…Far from home, elephant gun Let's take them down one by one We'll lay it down, it's not been found, it's not around… …And it rips through the silence of our camp at night And it rips through the silence, all that is left is all that I hide.. (from the song,Elephant Gun, by Beirut)

BARGAIN PRICES ON ELEPHANT GUN  is a commentary on how the individual adapts to the requirements of contemporary society. Contemporary forms of social relations develop in the space of the old antinomy between the personal and the collective, or social. Though individual freedom is by now a well-established principle of social organization, society continues to reproduce itself on the basis of rules and laws that eventually force it into a state of crisis, reducing it to a mere product of social mediation. Contemporary lifestyles, generally aimed toward consumption, challenge the sense of identity and ultimately the integrity of individuals exposed to them.
The notion of interdependence is of particular importance in this context: what, in other words, is the relation between individual perspectives on contemporary lifestyles and individual action? To what extent are our present choices our own? If the past determines the future, what, or who, determines our present?
The artists participating in this exhibition tell their personal stories about resistance or compliance, about defying the workings of the system or finding ways to exist alongside it, about our choices with respect to what we leave behind and what we stick to in our effort to move ahead.
Works in the exhibition explore areas where there are no rigid distinctions between theory and practice; where the boundaries between the two seem to blur. They conjure up a universe of individual worlds that invoke contemporary awareness and use it as a prism through which to look upon how we experience reality. We all try to survive amidst the chaos of contemporary life. The exhibition poses questions regarding our sense of unease and anxiety, the individual’s incorporation into the social body, the call for freedom, the possibility or impossibility of a coexistence of the personal and the collective, the desire for change.

Thanos Klonaris explores the boundaries between the imaginary and the real, the relations and contrasts between existent and non-existent spaces. Believing that the three dimensions are not the sole criterion for the delineation of a space, he presents a series of documents of actions which unfold in a natural landscape into which he incorporates ground plans of artificial places.
